Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like asport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader.Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because itmakes your mind work. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same ordifferent conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in alibrary are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they alladd up to something; they are connected with each other and with other cities.The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places; the human problemsthat repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but withdifferent solutions according to different writings at different times.

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on bookssomebody tells you "ought" to read, you probably won't have fun. But if you putdown a book you don't like and try another till you find one that meanssomething to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a goodtime--and if you become as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or moregentle, you won'闷让t have suffered during the process.

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process ofgetting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this importantdiscovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry ifyou lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea forimproving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step inand make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made aboutgiving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this worldwithout getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpectedform. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important specialdelivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrotethe postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed apost-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window thatthere were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waitinglist. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He hadoverheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year agoabout delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, youcertainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one foryou. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothingbut complaints.”

With these new washing machines,turning stinking clothes back smelling good takes almost no work at all.Unlike other tasks that put me baking in the sun,sweating,burning,and getting myself all oily,washing clothes gives me the comfort of the laundry room and involves only pushing buttons.I take credits for 2 hours even though I only spend 15 minutes on my part.

Actually,doing laundry is not as simple as I thought.After I started reading the labels on those shirts.I found that some like to be washed cold while others like it warm.Dark clors don't mix well,expecially in hot water.Not everything should be dried in the dryer,and women's clothes tend to be less durable.Luckily,I was put off duty from ironing since I made a hole through my suit the other day.

But after doing if for so long,laundry is now a no-brainer for me.But it doesn't get boring.When I handwash my wife's more delicate underwear with some imagination,it gets pretty interesting.
